FOLTY LOFT

Folty Loft is a Norwegian Indie-pop band from Oslo. They asked me to make a CD-cover for their first album release, and this is the result. After listening to the music, in some way I was thinking about space, and at that time I was really inspired by old Sci-fi book and cartoon-covers. All photos were captured by me.

PISTASJIPAN

Pistasjipan is a delicious mix of pistachios, sugar, and egg whites. It has a natural green color, and the taste resembles marzipan. The difference is that by using pistachios instead of almonds, it gets a rounder taste with more fat and a touch of the well known pistachio taste. The visual profile and packaging is a result of my bachelor’s degree in graphic design at Westerdals.

I was introduced to these extremely good sweets for the first time in 2014, and I saw a potential for it to be successful in norwegian supermarkets. Pistachios is one of the more expensive nuts that you can buy in Norway. Norwegians are big consumers, and many of them have a high income. Based on surveys I did for this project, it looks like a lot of people like pistachios and sugar, and that people would be curious to try out this product. When exhibiting the project at the Westerdals Bachelor Exhibition, I served a lot of samples, which ran out within an hour.

If you are interested in making this project into a real product, by investing or collaborate, contact me at: tolangs2@gmail.com or call me. Thanks for your attention!

WOODLAND

The skateboard-artist Lars Kjemphol makes skateboards out of quality plywood, puts them in his homemade skateboard press, and shapes them by hand. I made a visual profile and a magazine that explains how a board is made from start to finished product.

Visual profile:

The whole visual profile is based on the handmade feeling you get when you enter Kjemphol’s studio. The typography for the logo is hand carved, photographed, and then vectorized. The logo shape idea is based on the piece that is left when the skateboard is cut out of the wood. The wood is left in the skateboard press for 24 hours. For this project I also made a magazine to present the whole process for the visual profile.

Magazine (main):

The magazine presents skateboard culture from an unusual angle: the making of a skateboard. For the artist, the magazine is a tool to give people insight in what he is doing and show how unique every shape can be. The magazine became a brilliant application surface for the visual profile.

TUMULT

The Westerdals school project brief was to make a Magazine for graphic designers about magazine design. Tumult is a magazine about magazine ads. For the layout, I have played with the contrast between order and chaos. I did this by cutting out letters from different magazine ads, made a punk/anonymous letter feeling and mixed it with a grid. I also did a lot of experiments with cutting and pasting the original pictures by hand to give it an unique, more interesting and original look. Most of the pictures were captured by me.

ALIFAR

In this Westerdals school project, I made a visual profile for a fictional convenient food mart. The owner had the Arabic name Ali Farkouh. I created a portmanteau of the first and last name (similar to FedEx (Federal Express)) and thereby made a more catchy name that is easier for people to remember; Alifar. The three humps on the camels back represent the three sections:

1) Vegetables

2) Meat and dairy products

3) Spices.

MOON MINION PRO

Westerdals School project brief: “Make a brochure and a poster and present a quality typeface. Adobe is the client (hypothetically) and the audience group is graphic designers. Do research and make the content. Cutting and pasting is allowed. You are only allowed to use the typeface (no photos, Illustrations etc.) for the design. You can use frames, boxes and lines, as well as any ornaments if they belong to the typeface. All colours are also allowed.”

About the brochure: I picked the classic Adobe Minion Pro because it is easy to read and it reminds me of fairy tale books from when I was a kid. When I made the brochure, I wanted to keep the focus on the typeface, but at the same time present a story about the moon. The idea was to put fictional stories about the moon up against hard facts, to make the brochure more interesting to study. I presented the greek and cyrillic letters by replacing some of them with the letters in the headings. I printed the cover on 300 gram white Scandia paper and the main content on 150 gram off-white Scandia paper to give the finish a “moonlight look”.

SHAKEY GRAVES POSTER

Shakey Graves is a gentleman from Texas who makes really good music. After listening to his song Roll the Bones hundreds of times, I ended up making this poster inspired by the text and the feeling that this song gave me. All letters and drawings are handmade.

BOK PÅ VEITVET

Bok på Veitvet is an alternative library in Veitvet in Oslo, Norway, where people can deliver and borrow books without registering at all. It’s all based on trust, and it’s meant to be a free-space open for dialogue with the locals at Veitvet. Bok på Veitvet also arranges concerts, exhibitions and workshops.

Logo: In addition to the B and V, the face with the huddle represents Bok På Veitvet as a place that is open for dialogue between the inhabitants of that area.

FOCUS VISUAL

This is the visual profile for my mascot. To see the whole process from the making of the mascot “Focus”, you can click here.

The typography in the logo has round sans-serif shapes to emphasize the fact that Focus is nice and kind. The strokes in the typography represents the cord which is attached to the mascots brain. The plug-shaped U in the logo and the pattern is inspired by Focus’s plug-in brain. I chose the orange color because orange really stands out, even at a distance, and invites attention.

FOCUS PHYSICAL

Sometimes, when I hear/read/work with something which is amazingly boring, I lose my focus even though I shouldn’t. My little helper, “Focus”, is watching me from the shelf by my desk, constantly telling me to focus. He’s the guy I’m thinking of when I’m stuck in my creative process. His plug-in brain, glasses, bowtie, and eyes convey the message: FOCUS!

From some sketches of the mascot I made the physical mascot by hand. The key-materials that I built Focus from was Fimo dough, lego pieces, metal and spraypaint. I wanted to make him by hand and not in a 3D program, to give it a more analog look, which also reflects how I like to work.

COCOCAIN

By Mads Sæløen, Marlene McCann and Tor Hauk Langseth.

Freia Regia Cococain is a fictional new series of cocoa drinks for young teenagers. Flavored with chili, orange and mint, the main product resembles a bag of cocaine with a bankcard and a straw attached to it.

On the back of the card the user is offered a deal of 20% off the next purchase. Afterwards the card gives a 2% discount per purchase up until a 50% discount is reached. In this way, the user will effectively be "addicted" to the product.

We wanted to appeal to young teenagers by focusing on an aesthetic inspired by energy drinks and how young people might perceive the effect of drugs and narcotics.

At the same time we wanted to make the main product radically distinguished with the category language of cocoa products.

As a side product we aimed for a caffinated ready made white chocolate drink for the teens to grab on the go. It was important not to be mistaken for being "just another energy drink", but something completely new and refreshing.

NOLOGO MILKDISPENSER

There is a law against commercials in Norwegian primary schools. Why can Tine deliver milk to the public schools, with their logo on the cartons, and thereby expose their product for the kids? My info graphic shows a way to remove Tines exposure in Norwegian primary schools.

ORDFØRER-DEBATTEN

A poster I made for the major debate in Oslo, with students as the target group. While I worked with this project, I did cut my thumb really bad at the kitchen by an accident. This made the pen strokes for the naivistic illustration even better! My thumb works perfectly fine today, but at this moment it was a little bit hard to hold the pen.

BYPORTEN

Made by: Silje Olberg and Tor Hauk Langseth.

This was a fictive school project we did at Westerdals. The brief was to make the new visual identity for Byporten shopping center. Shapes from tradional Norwegian jewelry (sølje) for bunads inspired us to make the logo icon. The typography reflects this icons shape. The four different colors represent each season of the year.
